Berlin is a vast city and home to a population exceeding 3.5 million. Located on the northeastern side of Germany, close to the Polish border, the city of Berlin is centred around the River Spree, a large river which snakes through much of the city.

Divided into a number of distinct areas, Berlin is a sprawling city, with the main districts being Charlottenburg, Kreuzberg, Mitte and Tiergarten. Berlin's Mitte region stands in the centre of the city and is home to a number of superb historical monuments and structures, which include Gendarmenmarkt, Museum Island and the State Opera

On the western side of Berlin, Charlottenburg is a busy part of the city and known for its shops, bars and restaurants, with much of the area being rebuilt after damage in the war. Tiergarten is one of Berlin's most famous districts, featuring a large park and a host of top attractions, including the Brandenburg Gate to the east, and Potsdamer Platz to the south.
